From Culture Shock to Changed Heartbeat: My First Taste of Thailand

Traveling doesn't just change you – it changes your heartbeat. For me, that transformation began at 22, the moment our taxi pulled away from the airport and headed towards Khao San Road in Bangkok. I was with five friends, all with more travel under their belts than me, but as we entered the city, I was hit by a wave of pure culture shock. Millions of mopeds zipped by, tuk-tuks buzzed, and new smells, sounds, and an overwhelming busyness consumed me. My friends laughed at the look on my face; I was thinking, 'What have I let myself in for?'

The journey itself, about 45 minutes, felt like a lifetime. But fast forward ten weeks, and I'd had the time of my life. I fell head over heels in love with Thailand – the people, the food, the intoxicating smells, the thrilling tuk-tuk rides, and the vibrant neon cities.

From the serenity of Koh Chang to the crystal-clear waters of the Similan Islands, every experience etched itself into my soul. Zip-lining in Chiang Mai, exploring the absolute joy of the Phi Phi Islands' wonderfully claustrophobic streets – it was all pure wonder. Temples, playful monkeys, breathtaking beaches, rich culture, and spontaneous dancing, all in the Land of Smiles. I loved every second.

That initial jolt of culture shock eventually melted away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of belonging and discovery. This is the essence of being a Traveller, Not a Tourist – embracing the raw, unfiltered experience and letting it change you. It was this journey that ultimately inspired Globetrekr, a promise to give back to the incredible places that inspire us.
